Here for You
These are just a few of the encouraging messages embroidered on the leisurewear designed by feel-good clothing company, Hanesie. What began as a therapeutic COVID hobby-turned-side hustle for Fairfield native, Ellie Haney, transformed into a successful business. As her products grew in popularity, she left her job in the corporate world and made the leap to running Hanesie full-time in 2021. Ellie’s intent is “to create a community of support, love, and light,” as a way of helping those who struggle with mental health. This is a topic close to Ellie’s heart, as she herself has faced her own battles with depression and anxiety. In fact, a percentage of proceeds go to HOPE FOR THE DAY, an organization devoted to suicide prevention.
A look at the Hanesie website confirms that this is not an ordinary clothing line. Each collection and product is prefaced by an empowering introduction. Ellie is passionate about sharing her love and positivity, as proof that it is possible to overcome battles with mental health. Perhaps her own struggles are what make her products so appealing and meaningful. “It’s easy to forget how much love you have inside you,” Ellie notes.
Hanesie’s inspirational mantras apply to the nuts and bolts of the business, as well. Ellie has tirelessly researched the fabrics and vendors she uses for her clothing. “It has to be something I would wear, or I won’t sell it.” Just as important is the selection of colors. When Ellie was at her lowest point, the only things that lifted her spirits were light and colors. Ellie literally beams when she talks about the meaning behind the shades she uses for her designs. Instead of primarys or neon brights, she prefers the comfort and peace of warm, earthy tones. Each hue represents a different emotion or quality to Ellie. Self-love is emphasized throughout the Hanesie collections, as it is poetically described on the website, “How incredible is the power of realizing this. We will be wearing that capability on our bodies. A constant reminder. The heavyweight feel of the garments allowing us to feel that sink in.” The combination of the textiles, colors, and messages is almost like a sartorial hug from within.
The clothing, hats, and accessories are just one part of Hanesie. Ellie is now speaking at schools to share her uplifting, supportive messages. Spreading the belief that no one is alone is vital to her, as she shares her story with kids facing their own self-doubts, depression, and anxiety. “I think I’m more relatable because I’ve been in their shoes. I know how it feels to struggle, yet so happy to be alive.”
Ellie is quick to attribute her success story to the positive support system of family and friends she’s developed. “They’ve always believed in me which gave me the courage to start Hanesie.”
