Carpe Vinum “Seize the Wine”

Needing an escape from reality and the never-ending meetings via zoom mid-week, I ventured off to Watertown, Connecticut, to pay a visit to Hawk Ridge Winery. Hawk Ridge Winery is a part of Hidden Breeze Farm. Hidden Breeze Farm has been in existence since January, 2012 and the winery opened since 2016. The property is very diverse in agriculture with 4 acres of grapevines, beehives, squash and garlic, you can even spot a handful or horses roaming around. The name ‘Hawk Ridge’ is coined after the abundance of red tail hawks that can be seen soaring over the property.

On the way into the property, you can’t help but be distracted while you drive through the 60 acres of rolling hills and vines. The surrounding views pull you in, making you forget about anything else other than the day and wine ahead.  Carpe Vinum.

The wine list is vast, and they even offer a beer selection for those not so vino inclined! Wines are available to be purchased the bottle, glass, and flights. Currently on the list they offer, 8 Reds, 9 Whites, 2 Rosé, and 1 Port. I was surprised to hear that they offered carbonated wine, slushies and even freeze pops. The creative approach to wine making allows guests to enjoy the fruit of Hawk Ridge’s labor in many distinctive and exciting forms.

One of the unique aspects of this winery is the culinary experience that guests can partake in. The menu has an array of options to nosh on, including (but not limited to) cheeses from Arethusa Farm, and rotating seasonal delights. If you’re more of a picnic person, you are able to bring your own food here as well! Making it easy for guests to gather and plan their visits.

During my stay I enjoyed 2 wines by the glass, and paired them with a few of the delicious menu items:

Sassy Hawk White –This lightly oaked, fruit forward wine has subtle flavors of Granny Smith apples, grapefruits, and lime zest with a pineapple flavor to the finish. Paired with: Prosciutto & Chevre Flatbread

All Day Rosé –This delicate rosé of Grenache has lively aromas of hibiscus and ripe summer berries. Touches of rhubarb, cranberry, and raspberry grace the palate with a refreshing acidic finish. Paired with: Arethusa Farm Cheese Plate
