SKIN ISSUES? CHECK YOUR GUT.
It happens to all of us, you wake up with a breakout, rash or spot on your skin and wonder where that came from. We run out to buy the latest trending product that does not get the expected results or actually makes it worse.
Then we squeeze or pick at it, making it red or even develop a scar only to order another product we see on social media, but that doesn’t work either (insert sad face). The issue is most likely with your gut. As a Certified Health Coach turned Licensed Esthetician, I see many clients unhappy with their skin issues. After studying both gut health and skin conditions, I enjoy helping my clients make positive improvements and start the healing process.
Researchers have found that when gut health (or digestive balance) is off, the skin can become irritated. Skin irritations might include breakouts, skin sensitivity, redness, signs of aging, and more. The skin microbiome has caught the attention in dermatology as skin disorders, and its connection /influence on the immune system. Many common skin conditions are associated with an imbalance with the skin microbiome.
Our gut needs to be a balance of good and bad bacteria. The microbiome becomes imbalanced when we introduce too many processed foods, dyes, additives, preservatives, GMO’s, antibiotics, or have unknown food sensitivities. Even a “healthy” food cause sensitivity. When the body is inflamed the flare up occurs (there’s your breakout, spot, or rash). Eczema, rosacea, hives, cystic acne, congested skin, etc. are all your bodies way of telling you something isn’t right internally.
So what do we do about it? In a world where we want fast results, you will be better off addressing the root cause and be free of these distressing conditions once and for all. Trying to eliminate common food allergens is a good way to start but ultimately seeking advice from a qualified Naturopathic or Functional Medicine Doctor can prove invaluable.
When you book an appointment with me I will analyze your skin and ask some questions about your dietary habits and water intake (don’t worry I don’t judge). During your facial treatment I will use gentle products with ingredients that will calm your skin rather than irritate it more. Every treatment is customized to what is needed at the time. I feel educating my clients on ingredients and product usage is key to forming a trusting relationship. When you are in a relaxed environment I can tame your ‘angry’ skin – in order to relax you as I introduce several healing modalities that help me help you. Good product ingredients just like good food choices are key to the healing process. I have researched many skincare lines through the years looking for ethically sourced, chirally correct (meaning containing only the molecules with the ability to give desired results), and preferably certified organic brands that can be used on the most sensitive skin. Oftentimes clients are using products that are essentially drying out their skin at an attempt to heal acne for example – this works against us instead of for us. Luckily, I have many brands in my toolbox to help.
